Hey Folks,

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on my post about the E1SS LTD model. I found an Eastman dealer that was within an hour's drive from my home and the wife was game to drive out there on Memorial Day.

First, I test drove the E1SS with the red varnish finish. It was ok. Neck felt good but the tone didn't jump out at me. Wanting to stick with short scale, I tried an E2OM in sunburst and that also sounded good but it didn't grab me. So, I said screw it and picked up an E8D. Now, that one had some punch and I would have been happy bringing it home. But, they were offering 20% off so I went ahead and tried the E20D. At first strum, my wife looked right up from her phone. I played it some more and it had some great gusto.

My current guitar is a Breedlove Atlas AD20SR+ from 2006 and it has really warmed over the years. It's pretty compressed in terms of dynamics. I wanted something brighter with some really great overtones. I get that from the Eastman. It's very different in the way it responds. It has 3 volumes; soft, medium, and holy moly! Since I've committed to only playing acoustic, I'm looking forward to growing with this guitar.

Quick question, how long does it take for the lacquer smell to dissipate?

  Tusq or Bone

Age old question...but I'm curious to see what people on this forum think. I've used both. Because it's "natural" bone can be inconsistent. But when it's good it good. From my experience I really don't notice a difference. A well shaped saddle or nut with a perfectly flat bottom is probably a more important quality then the material itself.

Seems like a fair price considering shipping included, if I read the ad correctly. Not for me because of the nut/neck but I have read quite a few good reviews about them.

  SB Build: Inside Look

I saw this post online yesterday and thought it was interesting.  The OP initially complained about the uneven build quality, which was discovered when his luthier was taking off parts to clean some scratches on his guitar.  That post was removed, but replaced with the following explanation from Eastman, as well as photos of a guitar being built (and the OP's guitar).

You can read the explanation from Eastman (and see it in the photos), but basically, they hand carve in some additional depth on the treble side.  I blocked out the OP's name and avatar, in case he's on here and didn't want to be identified.

Posted by: toyoyo - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (3)

Hello everyone!

I've just acquired an Eastman E1OM and I'm really happy with it Smile. It's my first "real" acoustic guitar.

Just a little question, how do you deal with the satin finish cleaning ? Do you thing a Dunlop 65 Polish & Cleaner is safe for it ?

More generally, how do you clean yours guitars ?

Thanks for yours answers!
PS : I'm a french engineer and I'm very glad to be part of the Eastman family Smile

  Eastman E1SS-LTD
Posted by: markdintx - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (16)

Hey Folks,

1st post. Has anyone had a chance to play one of these? I can't find any videos on Youtube or any other reviews. I like the E10SS but the price point of the E1SS with the LTD finish and a pickup really makes it an interesting option. If anyone has any experience with this guitar, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks!

Mark

  Older Eastman Questions
Posted by: Treenewt - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (8)

Afternoon everyone!

I recently ran across a pretty sweet early model Eastman (2007 vintage, old logo and everything). It seems to be in fantastic shape, sounds amazing, and the seller is asking a fair price.  I'm going back tomorrow to take a look at it, bringing my wife along, too!  Question for you guys is this: is there anything I should be looking for that might not be readily apparent, problem wise?  The finish is in good shape, neck appears straight with no hump at the 14th (had that happen on an E20 a few years ago).  Just wondering if anyone has seen anything in their Eastman journey I should look closely at.

Thanks!

  Disapointing Pickup Performance
Posted by: Gary in NJ - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (20)

I've been enjoying my AC422CE. I've played it back-to-back with my Blueridge BG-160 several times acoustically (both have rosewood back & sides) and I like the tone from the guitar. It's very different than a dreadnought (not as much low-end) with a very unique voice.

For the last 10 years the BG-160 with an aftermarket LR Baggs iMix (Element USP and M1 Soundhole pickups) has been my gig guitar. I know it very well. I know exactly where the setting need to be for both the rehearsal and gig PA's. Last night was the first time I used the AC422CE at band rehearsal. I plugged it in and immediately noticed it had a very low output. I increased the gain (from 4 to 8) and it seemed to have the right output. Playing through our first song I transitioned from strumming to flat picking and my guitar disappeared from the mix. I started strumming again and I could again hear the guitar. I upped the gain for the next song - same result, except this time my band members are looking at me like "did you bring your Blueridge".

My AC422 sounds terrible through the PA. Is the Fishman Matrix known to be a thin pickup? Am I just spoiled by my iMix? This guitar isn't usable as an acoustic-electric guitar. I'm wondering if I have a bad transducer or something else? Before I start pulling things apart, is there a way I can simply trouble shoot this?

For the sake of good order, I did check the voltage at the battery. It was showing 8.75 volts, so I changed it with a fresh battery that showed about 9.5vdc. It made zero impact. I know many of you are going to suggest "just install a K&K". I have a few thoughts on that. First, for the type of playing I do, I wont benefit from a K&K. I'm a strummer and flat picker in a band environment. Secondly, I am concerned with feedback.

I'm not a big fan of USP's, that's why I used a blended system in my BG-160. BTW, when comparing my AC422 to my BG, I was only using the Element USP in the BG.

If there isn't anything wrong with my Matrix, then I will have to upgrade it. I like the factory installed volume and mid-sweep controls in the soundhole and wouldn't be happy about pulling them out. The Matrix appears to use a ceramic transducer in a metal housing. The Element is a ribbon. I wonder if I could simply swap-out the transducer.

Oh BTW, I do play through a pedal board that has compression, reverb, chorus and a DI, so going to a Fishman DI board wont do anything for me. My comparison today was from the guitar straight to an amp. This PUP is defective or it sucks.
