Allow myself to introduce...myself...

My name is Dan and I'm a long time Eastman guitar owner!

My first Eastman was an AR805ce, bought used in (or around) 2005. I was amazed by this thing. It had a big, acoustic sound. I was able to use it in jazz duo and trio settings without an amp. Ultimately, I stopped doing these small duo/trio, acoustic jams and needed something that would be a better fit in a full band electrically/amplified without feeding back...and moved on from the AR805.

My second Eastman was an El Rey 2 bought new from Jeff Hale's shop in 2006. It was one of the first ones and had a very early serial number (I think it was 003 IIRC?). I actually had Otto D'Ambrosio do a setup on it because at the time he had a shop in Providence, RI which isn't far from where I live. This guitar worked very well in large jazz group settings. But then I got the urge for a wider body, little more traditional type jazz guitar and moved on from the El Rey 2.

My third Eastman, of which I still have, was an AR403 bought in late 2012 from Bernunzio music shop. This guitar has been a jazz workhorse for me and has seen alot of gigs. I love the size...it's thin enough to be comfortable yet has enough depth to give a full hollow body jazz guitar type tone from Grant Green to Peter Bernstein. I'm playing less straight ahead jazz these days, but I still have the AR403 as my jazz axe.

My fourth Eastman, of which I still have, was an T386 bought in 2014 from Bernunzio music shop. I love this ting and it has been a workhorse for me in my funk, non-straight ahead jazz, and rock bands and gigs. I had no real problem with it stock, yet gear GAS made me replace all the electronics and I went with Gibson 57 Classic pickups. The guitar is fantastic and one of my favorite I've ever had. These days, I'm wondering if there's an Eastman that might be a step up from my T386 though. Like the T59, T186, etc.

  E40d neck.
Posted by: REHII - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (2)

I have an E40d that has a three piece neck like all the other E series D style Eastman’s I have seen.
All of the photos I see of E40 models show what looks like a two piece neck with an ebony stripe down the middle.
When I asked eastmanabout it they didn’t really give me much of ananswer.
My guitar was made dec 15 2016.
All of the photos of guitars I fend on the internet are newer.
Any one here have a E40d like mine that has a neck with no ebony stripe down the center?
It is c shaped and the long shaft is really really figured. Maybe that’s why it’s not cut down the middle to make a two piece.

  Incoming- AC320

Well, as well all know, Eastmans can be like potato chips...you can’t just have one! I have been thinking about adding a dread ever since I picked up my E1OM last fall, but the right thing hadn’t come along.

Enter Brian at Sun Valley Guitars. I was perusing his site and chatting with him about the E10D he has (a burst that is gorgeous), but couldn’t justify the outlay right now. Turns out he has several AC320 close outs at a pretty dang good price. After thinking about it for a few days and talking to my wife, one of them is on its way to me. I look forward to getting it in hand and giving it a go. I’ll update once she arrives!

No idea how many of these might have been produced...but for those of you (us) who just have to play Eastmans across the spectrum.....

  DM1 guitar arrived today

This guitar is absolutely amazing.....a unique sound all it’s own. I had a Gitane signature petite Bouche a couple of years ago....neck was really fat and the sound seemed kind of hollow. This Eastman was set up perfect right from the get go.....with a really beautiful rich sound. The narrow D neck is easy to thumb the low E which makes it easy to either fret or mute that string. The finish is really different, very thin, open pore. Love the stain and the walnut neck.....definitely a keeper.

New member and new Eastman - ANOTHER (positive) update!
Posted by: PickerPete - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (32)

Hi folks

Glad to find this place. I used to own an Eastman E8D. It was a nice guitar and beautifully made and finished, but I somehow couldn't get excited about it. I found it a bit too polite for a big, old dread somehow. I sold the guitar and wondered if upgrading to one of the Adi-topped dreads would do it for me. I never managed to find an E20D to play but did try out a couple of E10Ds and thought they were nice guitars but they too didn't grab me somehow. Honestly, I thought they lacked a bit of life somehow. This is all VERY subjective of course. They were all beautifully made but just not quite to my taste.

I was beginning to think that perhaps the Eastman thing was just not quite, well, my thing! But, while auditioning Eastman dreads, I got to try an E1OM and a GA-bodied PCH range guitar. I liked them both more than any of the higher end guitars I had played. So I finally tracked down an E1D to play. I liked that much more than any other Eastman I had ever tried, irrespective of the price. It seemed so much more alive and rich. So perhaps it is the wood combination I like, perhaps there is something about the bracing or perhaps there is some other reason why I came home with it yesterday. But I snapped it up with very little hesitation.

I have only an hour or so playing on it yet but I find it a lot of fun. Lovely trebles and mids and enough bass to keep a flat-picker happy. Better volume than other Eastmans I have tried (to my ear) and, most importantly it is very lively and responsive. It could possibly use a tweak in terms of set-up but it plays so easily as it is that I don't want to do ANYTHING that might impact on the guitar tonally or in terms of volume. So I will probably just play it for a few months and see what happens.

I will post again when I have more experience but, for now, I am looking forward to getting to know this good, honest vibrant dread!

All the best, Pete

  Buying a repaired guitar
Posted by: Meathead - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (7)

How many of you would be comfortable buying a guitar that has had a repair to a crack on the top?  What about a crack on the back?  I would think that back cracks aren't as concerning.  One can often find discounted guitars that have had repairs... the question always becomes "should I consider?"

Just curious what folks think on the subject.  Based on some light research, it does not appear that cracks really impact tone very much.   Bert, curious your opinion on the topic as well.

Cheers..
Tim

  Nut Width Too Wide ?
Posted by: billymo - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

"You'll get used to it" I was told. But 1 13/16, that's wide! My hands are kind of small,
but I've been giving my Recording King ROS-647 Custom 12 Fret 000 a good long trial
period, its tone is amazing smooth, the below video (tiny hands, very wide necks) has helped to inspire.
