Posted this on the acoustic forum but thought some might be interested here as well.
Warning, long waffling, sleep deprived post… I love my sigma SDR-28MLE so much I wanted something similar for alt tunings but in the 14fret dreadnought body shape with a 1-3/4 nut and normal sale length.
I can’t spend big at present as I have other commitments and diminishing funds (inflation + kids = guitar poverty) so I started looking at Eastman and Sigma and whilst I love my Eastman E20P I find Eastman tone is slightly more modern than the all solid Sigma series in general.
I’ve learnt to love the neck on my Sigma so I started browsing their dreadnoughts and I spotted the SDR-45 for a good price online. It can get confusing and Sigma (AMI) have made to my knowledge at least 5 previous versions of a 14 fret D-45 style guitar, namely the:
DR-45 - Solid sitka top, Indian fingerboard, Indian rosewood back and sides (not solid), 1-11/16 nut.
DR-45E - As above with built in Electronics.
DT-45 - Solid spruce top/laminated Tilia back and sides, micarta board, 1-3/4 nut.
SDR-45YEARS - A limited edition all solid Adirondack/Indian rosewood dreadnought, ebony bridge, torch headstock, 1-11/16 nut.
SD-50 - A very limited all solid European spruce/cocobolo, 45 style trim all over with snowflake inlays, ebony bridge,1-3/4 nut.
I wasn’t interested in the laminate models (I still have some dignity), 1-11/16 nut or Cocobolo which left only the SDR-45, but this time the specs looked near perfect:
SDR-45 - D-14 Fret
Construction: Dovetail Neck Joint
Top: Solid Sitka Spruce
Back & Sides: Solid Indian Rosewood
Neck: Mahogany, Low Profile
Nut & Saddle: Bone
Fingerboard & Bridge: Ebony
Scale Length: 25.4” (645 mm)
Neck width at nut: 1-3/4” (44,5 mm)
Truss Rod: Two way Truss Rod
Tuning Machines: Grover Gold Open-Gear w/ Butterbean Knobs
Finish: Polished Gloss w/ Aging Toner
Soft-shell Case: SSC-D included
Strings: D´Addario EXP16
I was disappointed to see only a soft shell case included as my SDR-28MLE had a decent hard case included although to be fair it’s a very limited model and would be considerably more expensive than the SDR-45 if Sigma ever made any more.
I took the plunge and ordered one sight unseen from a large UK retailer. I also ordered a sigma hard case, as a D-45 style guitar in a soft shell case just seemed wrong like pairing a Hugo boss suit with slippers. I was somewhat alarmed and felt a little nauseous when I opened the big brown box to find absolutely no packaging at all, just the guitar in a soft shell case! Unfortunately I had no chance to play it due to work, I simply just checked it was in one piece, took a few snaps and and then put it away. When I opened the case I was immediately taken aback by the look of the guitar, it looked so much better than the horribly generic online retailer pictures which make this guitar look tacky. I couldn’t sleep last night as I was Childishly excited and got up at 6 this morning to inspect the guitar and tune it up…
…People… this thing is incredible!!! I’m not usually one for hyperbole but this guitar has stunned me and I have played many top flight guitars over the years including many 40 series Martins. I really hate coated strings and even with these strings this guitar sounds incredible. It rings like a flippin’ bell, so deep, warm and resonant but with those chimey sounds that one associated with the 40 series martins. It nails that Neil Young tone, I thought my SDR-28MLE was close tonally but this thing is near perfect.
It has a very different sound profile to my Adi/Madi Sigma, I can’t wait to change the strings to my beloved Thomastik over the coming days and properly compare these bad boys. Initial thoughts are that the SDR-28MLE has a more direct and fundamental tone where as the SDR-45 has that deep, enveloping big bass sound but I’ll now more when I can compare properly with fresh strings on both.
I’ll try and get a few pics up that I took yesterday but will hopefully get some better ones in the coming week and swap them out. Anyway if you are looking for an all solid dreadnought especially a 40 series Martin style dreadnought and don’t have/want to spend £5000-£11000 on a 40 series Martin you could do worse than look at this model. I think they are being discontinued and I don’t think they will produce a guitar of this quality at this price again.
Some pics, couldn’t get a good one of the back because it’s so reflective!
