Hi all - I am making a few changes to EGF on the web server side to continue to make the site perform well.

Please let me know on this thread however if you encounter an unusual issue while using EGF.  Appreciate it! Just making sure my changes aren't breaking anything.

  T386, 486 and 59 advice
Posted by: robbo400 - Forum: Eastman Electric and Archtop Guitars - Replies (7)

Hi all,

I am a relatively new guitarist having started older in life. At best, I am in the overlap between advanced beginner/ low intermediate and have been playing a Gretsch G5220 (Broadtron pick-ups) since I started around 4 years ago. It's a great budget guitar and has a nice sound but I am looking to add something different with a fuller darker sound.

I have a milestone birthday and am looking to treat myself to a thinline semi-hollow guitar. I love the deep mellow sound I hear (admittedly through budget computer speakers) from YouTube videos from the Gibson 335 but at £3- £3.5k in the UK, it is out of my league price-wise. My budget is about half that. I have admired the Eastman brand for a while and have looked at comparison videos of the T386, 486, 486B and T59.

To my ears (and I know from my hi-fi hobby how subjective this is) via poor PC speakers, the T386 sounds more mellow with the more budget Kent Armstrong pick-ups. I really love the Goldburst finish on the T486 and the look of the fretboard with parallelograms but sonically it sounds brighter than what I'm looking for. The T-59 sounds much warmer but I am not a fan of the worn-look varnishing or aged Lollar antiquity pick-ups and it doesn't look like Eastman make it available in the Goldburst without the worn-look.

Of course, I realise that the answer is to try all 3 back-to-back but there is nowhere in the UK that holds that kind of stock of Eastman after checking online. In any case, I think I'd be convincing myself to go with the 486 just for the appearance. I originally liked the idea of the 486B with the Bigsby versatility but, to my ears, that sounds brighter still. I have considered getting the T486 and then thinking of changing the neck pick-up (mostly where I play) to something more Gibson-esque but I've heard a variety of expert opinions as to whether it's the pick-up choice or the wood that make the most difference to sound.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I just wondered if anyone else gets where I am coming from on how the guitar sounds to me and had any advice. I'm lucky enough to live near a good guitar tech and was wondering whether adjusting the height of pick-ups might also be a fix. My head tells me to listen to all 3 "blindfolded" and go with my ears. My heart tells me that the 486 Gold burst is so beautiful that it would be worth spending some more on modifying if I can get that idefinable sound I'm looking for.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Thumbs Up E6SS-TC with batwing pickguard (pics)

For those who asked me to post pictures, here you go.

The pickguard is a Holter. Taylor had one in the shop that fit perfectly ready to go, so no modifications were needed. Couldn't be happier with the results. Love the J-50 vibe!

Picked this koa beauty up today!  I actually love the fact that the koa is not bookmatched … it’s complex, asymmetrical, etc.!

  Amp for Acoustic Bass Guitar
Posted by: AlanSam - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (2)

Is it ok to play an acoustic bass guitar, for example the Fender CB-60, through a standard (ie not bass-specific) amp? I am primarily concerned with possibly damaging the amp if I sucumbed to temptation and just for the hell of it maxed out the volume. Any views?

  Bourgeois Touchstone Signature DB
Posted by: SasquatchLife - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (3)

Anyone else pretty interested in this new Touchstone model? Thermocured Adi top, Madagascar rosewood b/s. Under $4K for a new Bourgeois with those tonewoods/specs? Pretty dang tempting and an amazing deal if you ask me. And as an Eastman fanboy, it's cool that Eastman is involved in the build process.

TAS did a live stream with Dana about these in case anyone missed it! John and TAS are the best too.

  Mold Inside Guitar
Posted by: Roy - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (1)

Bought a used acoustic guitar (Not an Eastman) online from Guitar Center several years ago.
I really liked the guitar, but it had mold inside it.
Really smelled & thought it was the case.
Set the case outside with the lid open in the sunshine when the sun was out. Odor still there.
Looked inside the guitar & saw tiny white flecks of mold.
Read quite a few articles on how to kill the mold. Most said you can never get rid of it.

Yes, you can. Here's how I killed it.

Had an aquarium hood light with two led lights. Each about the size of a domino.
Placed the lights inside the guitar for around 12 hours per day.
The first 5 days odor still there. After the 6th day & apprx 70 hours the mold was dead, never returned & the odor was gone

Exclamation Pickup control vibration
Posted by: isaacsmiff - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

Hope there is some experience of this issue on here, can’t find any on the WebTube!

I have an L R Baggs Lyric pickup in my E10SS. I installed it myself about three years ago now. The sound hole volume control started to resonate/vibrate about two months ago. At first I thought it might be cabling inside, although I was careful not to have hanging wires, so double checked those, the battery pouch and the under saddle mic itself - all secure.

The volume control was the last thing I suspected. Stuck firmly to the underside of the sound hole but that was what was vibrating on certain notes (E, A & D mostly). I removed it, cleaned it and the residual glue on the underside, applied the spare adhesive and for good measure relocated it from about 11 o/clock to 12 o/clock position. Fine… for a fortnight!!

Now the vibration is back! New adhesive patch, new position. Could it be the control itself? Presence is turned all the way down, could that loosen something inside?

Anyone else experienced this?

Hey,

New to the forum, but a friend 'who's in the know' sent these through pictures of what's supposed to be a new Eastman electric...I assume these must be coming out at the NAMM show tomorrow?

Curious what you think!
