Hi there from cold but sunny Switzerland
back in partial Home Office, guess close before lockdown again.
As you might have read in other posts, I am in the process of finding a new Acoustic Guitar. Maybe the "only" Acoustic I need going forward (yeah right )
I tried playing everythig I can, getting to know the different brands, tonewoods etc. Just trying to get an idea what I really like in tone and also in feel. Hitting shops and also meeting friends and playing their Guitars.
There have been a few models that I really enjoyed over the last couple of months. Thought the sound was very nice, also the neck and the overall feel. Certainly there have been a lot of Intruments that were build "better", more skilled Luthier and also the use of "better" materials (on paper for sure). All of them were more expensive, way more sometimes.
Then you come home and take your "old" Guitar out of its case, play a few chords and you think, mhhh not that bad at all....not at all . Maybe it is cause it feels & sounds familiar. I don't know.
I even took my Dreadnought to Shops and compared it to other Guitars. And being honest (well, I am still a beginner, maybe that plays a part as well) I never thought another Instrument was way better. They were different for sure and some I preferred but never as much to trade in my "old" companion and walk out with a new Guitar.
At least for me, at the moment, it does mean: Enjoy what you have!
I know it is cliché but sometimes we forget or don't see anymore what we have in our current Guitars.
That doesn't mean I wont get another Dread soon . There are certain things I got to prefer, wider nut 1 3/4, beefier Neck shape but talking tone, my Dread sounds nice and sweet. Played softly even though a dread, it sounds fantastic, better than most of the big names I played in the shops. Maybe it is the Engelmann spruce, which is known for delivering when played gently, on the other hand it has its limits when digging in (frankly for home use, I hardly ever get to its limits - but it does leave me wonder why Engelmann has been used for a dread. I wont complain though), maybe it is the bolt on neck, who knows.
Also the build is very clean, inside you can barely see any glue, the joints fit perfectly and everything seems flawless. Also not heavy build, certainly lighter than my Eastman.
Don't ask me why I came up with this thread, maybe cause both my Kids have "chickenpox" (I had to google, hope it is the correct term) so you can imagine the "circus" at home at the moment. Maybe it is cause I realised that what I have is doing all I need and some. So take the Guitars you haven't played in a while or the ones you think of selling out of their cases and give them a spin.
here the specs and some pics of my oldest Guitar (out of two , the other being the Eastman E8OM which I also really enjoy lately)
