After owning my E8OM for three years now I thought I show her a bit of appreciation and start a little project.
Changing to a classic 000 pickguard. Ordered from JP Guitars in the UK. 000-18/000-28 style pickguard, celluloid, brown Tortoise.
Now the original pickguard is fine no issues with it. But I just wanted that she looks like a 000 acoustic even if it is ‚just‘ by Martin standards. Well correct me if that is wrong…
I am mainly a strummer, maybe one of the few that enjoys it on a smaller Guitar as well. Of course, not heavy handed nonetheless a bigger pickguard will not hurt I guess
There is something about this E8OM that just fascinates me. My kids prefer the E10SS‘s sound and look but I still have a faible for the smaller one even though I have gone through some ‚hassle‘ with it. For one, it isn’t tidy inside, some glue left overs, that inside coating not applied smoothly… a bit of a Diva i‘d say.
I Did de-gloss the fretboard, had to show a little crack on the top but beneath the nitro to a luthier. All fine. And now, no idea how that happened, the bridge lifted a small bit and shows a little gap. I really hope it can be re-glued w/o taking off the entire bridge. If that is possible. Not a clue.
Sorry, back to the project. The pickguard arrived today. Looks nice. Happy about it. First quick placement shows the radius fits and it should just about cover the tan line everywhere. Remarkable tan line I think considering the Guitar is in its case when not played and I cannot play daily, just a few times a week.
So as I never removed a pickguard before, I first thought I bring it to a luthier, show the bridge lifting, get them to install a second strap pin on the heel and remove the pickguard and place the new one. Well things came differently…might even tackle the strap pin going forward.
I read that lighter fluid is no danger for nitro. So I bought fluid for Zippo‘s. Seems it worked fine. Took a dental floss to slowly grind beneath the pickguard. Was able to lift it w/o heat or other stuff. The hard part was to remove the sticky glue. It all stayed on the guitar. Had to soak it with lighter fluid a few times. Best was to rub with the fingers, even got a blister. Took me quite some time. Finally it all came off. Used a cloth for the final part.
I will attach the new pickguard tomorrow. Just placed it on top to see how it looks. Nice. The Guitarstrap looks nice too I think. Rock‘n‘Roll

Mhh.. the pics are not arranged in order I am afraid. Tried to. Sorry
What are your thoughts on the OM / 000 pickguard issue? My decision was purely from an aesthetical point of view….and maybe by some standards from the past
Cheers
