The Eastman Sound

How would you describe the Eastman sound.  I first got interested in them because I heard they were an amazingly well built guitar and a great value.  Now that I have actually found some to play I realize that the sound is different and they are much more than just a clone of another company.  I like the unique  tone and clarity.  My E2D almost chimes without sounding thin or bright. Very hard to explain.  So I ask,  how do. You describe the Eastman sound.

Just got an SB59 (used)  Curious about when the guitar was built.  I have the serial # on the headstock 12750288.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Hello. I have been intrigued by Eastman since I started hearing about them in the corners of the inter web a few years back.  They are hard to find in the wild up here in NH but I finally came across a E2D-cd used in my local shop.  As soon as I picked it up and looked it over I knew that the reputation that preceded it was well deserved. I brought it home and it once ha made me rethink my entire approach to guitars.  My 000-18 is having a tough time keeping up.  I love the nuanced sound and especially the neck carve. I picked it up used and can not believe the price for such an amazing guitar.

I returned to my shop a few days ago and they had a used DT30-OM. Well after sleeping on it over the weekend I called them up and put down a deposit.  Now I am trying to decide if I want to trade the Martin in towards it.  This seems like a great forum and I am happy to find other Eastman enthusiasts.

  Another REALLY Belated NGD

Have been playing a '78 Tak 370 SH ("lawsuit") off & on - mostly off - that I bought in '80. Spent many hours reading the plaudits of Eastman on AGF and occasionally on UMGF, so in my 78th year figured this is probably my last hurrah, & bought a new E20D TC from Acoustic Music Works back in Oct. I realize it's 'apple/oranges' comparing it to the Tak but WOW - this is an incredible guitar! The workmanship, the setup, the sound, the sustain, the appearance - is fantastic. However, I violated GAS rule #1 - wasn't able to find any locally to play beforehand (pun?). What I hadn't taken into consideration was that my left thumb reconstruction would have as much of an impact with the E20 wider neck. Having some problems getting 'clean' cowboy chords. While I'm still working at it, wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and any suggested any workarounds. Saw some AGF posts re: a neck shave, but it's not the neck depth but rather the width. Appreciate any advice!

  8D-TC or 20D-SB

Thinking of my next Eastman. And I know there are other discussions on here about the torrified tops…but I guess I am bringing it up again. ? And am still fairly new to them. I “accidentally” got a 6D-tc a couple of weeks ago…and absolutely fell in love with it.

I would like to get a rosewood version…can’t decide if I want the exact rosewood version of what I have (and love) or to give the non-torrified too a try…I also live sunburst finish.

Thoughts?

  My E6OM-TC
Posted by: R22 - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (31)

Hey Folks,

I have a question for all of you, but first a little history.

I recently sold my Martin OM18V. The V neck, and scale length were starting to bother me as my hands (along with the rest of me) are getting older. I don't care for the Martin MLO necks, otherwise I would have purchased a 000-18.

The Eastmans, spec wise, were a perfect fit. Pretty much everything I was looking for, right down to the 12" radius. So I watched and listened to a million UT video's. The E6OM's with sitka just sounded better to me than the E10OM's with adirondack. The E10's, to my ears, sounded a little harsh in the trebles, where the E6 was smooth and rich.

I've had the E6OM-TC for about a month now, and I just don't love the trebles. Specifically for fingerpicking. With a pick they sound fine. Strumming, it is in some cases, better than my J45. For fingerpicking however, It just isn't working for me. The trebles are too mellow and rounded. They lack "sparkle" for want of a better word. Maybe a better descriptor would be that they are too "wet" sounding. I want a more dry and fundamental tone. If I'm being honest, the whole guitar is a little too wet sounding for me. Arpeggios lack clarity, and can sound smeared.

So, to my question. Would the E10OM's give me what I'm lacking with the E6OM?

I know I'm going to get the "you have to go out and play one" response, but we all know how hard it is to find one in the wild these days.  So I ask the question, to just get a sense of what you guys have experienced.

Thanks in advance,

Roger

Wink A brutal topic with lots of shouting and direct threats: Fingerstyle vs. Picks
Posted by: Rens - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (13)

So, I play 99% fingerstyle. I'm trying more jazz, so that is going to go down significantly since I love jazz. Yet, while I swap rather easily between pick and fingers, I have to say I feel more at home when using fingers. I'm not a fan of the nails at all, I love having short nails, but that's just not happening on one hand. It's worth the trade-off though, the range of tones I can produce using just fingers is much wider than with a pick. I've noticed the big differences in types of picks, obviously, but still... taking a guitar and using a pick makes me feel like I'm about to perform, taking a guitar and going fingerstyle makes me feel like I'm just enjoying myself. I know, a highly personal experience. Which is why I'm opening this, hoping for a civil but of discussion about our views.

What do we think? Pick? Fingers? Too steep a learning curve for just fingers? The music you like isn't really doable with fingers? And was Big Bird ever interrogated when the police were looking for the Green River Killer?

  New head stock?
Posted by: augustinehui90 - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (18)

Hello everyone,
I am new to the whole Eastman game. I love the community and the guitars! This is my first ever Eastman purchase after having looked at them for more than a year.

So a few weeks ago I finally purchased a brand new E10om but found a flaw in the finish. So I told the dealer and the dealer was able to arrange an exchange for a new one. However the new OM looks different? Is there any particular reason why the headstock is no longer gloss? And Is there a reason there is a line down the middle now? (Sorry if these are dumb questions)

Super excited for the guitar to arrive from the dealer.

  Spruce rosewood OM models
Posted by: speedydunlop - Forum: Eastman Acoustic Guitars - Replies (9)

Hi all
I am thinking of buying an OM but I need advice about the differences between E8OM E8OM TC and E20OM (I want the spruce rosewood as you can probably tell). I have the E2000 which has the wider nut and string spacing and chunkier neck - terrific guitar- but I want an OM with good fingerstyle pedigree and more bass response. What are your subjective opinions on the differences in these models - particularly regarding overall sound, fingerstyle playability and neck profile. Not too concerned about aesthetics. Thanks

  General Wisdom on The Uptowns
Posted by: chwillie - Forum: Eastman Electric and Archtop Guitars - Replies (1)

My 2005 Uptown 810ce plays beautifully and is perfect itself--with a lousy pickup, which I'm changing to a KA hand-wound 12 pole.  I've had it about 8 months now.

What's to know about the Uptowns?  I've searched and can't find much about them.
