It took a while, what with the way shop inventories are and all. But today I unboxed my new E6OM and I really don't think I could be happier.
I have been waiting since August to find one, based simply on reputation - the way the two local shop owners who deal them responded with an enthusiastic "Oh yeah!" when I asked if Eastmans were as nice as I had heard, and the unvarnished love with which all you folks here speak.
I hadn't actually SEEN an Eastman until about a week ago, other than a beat-up PCH dreadnaught some housing-challenged kid was pounding at the farmers market last summer. Health concerns being what they are, I was happy he didn't offer to let me play it. But last week one local dealer got ONE in - not even a model I was interested in, but at least one I could try and judge for build quality, playability, and sound. Very impressed! Okay, if this is what they can do then one that fits my criteria - sitka, mahogany, shortened scale - very well may do it for me... if I have been told the truth.
I could never have imagined buying a guitar I had not played myself - or even held, for that matter - but obviously lots of people do it. I'm gonna give it a shot, says I, if I find a dealer somewhere that strikes me as substantial and willing to work with me. My first search was at a well-known shop that shall go unnamed. Woe is me, their price had gone up $50 in the past few days - probably simply because they had inventory.
A Google search led me to Backstage Music in Starkville, Mississippi. They are a four-time NAMM Top 100 Dealer, which gave me confidence. They talked to me for quite a while, sent pictures and video, and promised to do whatever might be needed if I wasn't satisfied. Shipping cost half of what sales tax would have been here. Honestly, I would have preferred to deal locally, but six months is long enough to wait.
Allen McBroom, who runs Backstage Music, told me that in normal times they take inventory when needed, call Eastman to order, and have their goods in five days or so. For the past months, though, it has been more a matter of calling and asking "What have you got?" They (Eastman) always have the Cabaret and Gypsy models, he told me... but he has no market for these.
I am so happy that everything seems to have lived up to expectations. I scored!!!
Gotta go play some more now...
